Recently, as more people document everyday scenes and various moments on social media through photos, there has also been an increase in people showcasing their appearance through posts. Some upload selfies as they are, but many also edit their photos with Photoshop before posting them.
In particular, because many East Asians have narrow, small eyes, it is very common to edit the eye area to look larger and more defined.
As a result, people who feel self-conscious about having small eyes may consider medical services such as double eyelid surgery as an option.
Double eyelid surgery is a procedure that creates a double eyelid line on monolid eyes and is also commonly referred to as double eyelid cosmetic surgery. Desired shapes vary by age group, and younger generations who use social media often prefer eyes that look large and clear while maintaining a natural double eyelid line.
Double eyelid surgery lines are generally categorized as inline, in-out line, and outline. Inline double eyelids are characterized by a line that starts from the inner corner of the eye, giving a natural hidden double eyelid effect. Outline double eyelids have a line that starts from the outer side of the eye. This can make the eyes look more Western and open, but it often does not suit East Asian eyes. In-out line double eyelids are an intermediate form between outline and inline, helping the eyes look open yet natural.
Whether each line is suitable depends on factors such as the size and depth of the eyes and the degree of epicanthal folds. Therefore, even if double eyelid surgery is performed with an outline design, it does not necessarily make the eyes larger. It is recommended to decide based on factors such as whether the original eyes have ptosis, the condition of the eyelid skin, and the presence of epicanthal folds. When performed as an outline, there may be no change in eye size and the result may even look awkward.
Possible side effects after double eyelid surgery include bruising, rebleeding, and hematoma. Bruising usually improves within 1 to 2 weeks. Although rare, if rebleeding or a hematoma is large, emergency removal surgery may be required immediately after surgery.
Also, for 1 to 2 weeks immediately after surgery, patients may feel a foreign body sensation or tightness in the eyes. This usually begins to improve after one month and mostly disappears after 6 months, with persistent cases being very uncommon. In rare cases, dry eye, decreased vision, or visual field disturbance may occur temporarily.
Director Hwang Ho of Hyundai Aesthetic Surgery advised, "It is important to determine the double eyelid line and thickness by considering various factors, including the distance between the eyebrows and eyes, the degree of skin aging, the amount and thickness of fat in the upper eyelids, and whether ptosis is present," adding, "If the epicanthal fold covers the eye significantly or the horizontal length of the eye is narrow, combining procedures such as medial epicanthoplasty or lateral canthoplasty can be helpful."
