Types of Double-Eyelid Lines for Various Eye Shapes

Hello, this is Hyundai Aesthetic Surgery. Depending on whether a double-eyelid line is present, there can be a significant visual difference in how large the eyes appear. Double-eyelid surgery does not actually increase the physical size of the eyes, but because it can make the eyes look larger and create a clearer, more defined appearance, patients of many different age groups often look into double-eyelid surgery. Among them, most patients who come to me for consultation ask about which line would suit their eye shape.

The types of double-eyelid lines are broadly divided into inline, in-out line, semi-out line, and outline. They may also be classified largely by whether the starting point of the double-eyelid line begins from the epicanthal fold. Most patients who come to me for consultation are Asian, and statistically, the most common eyelid types are monolids without a double eyelid or thin inner double eyelids with a subtle line, known as inline double eyelids.

For these patients, I would like to explain the types of double-eyelid lines to provide helpful information on which line may be suitable for them. As mentioned earlier, double-eyelid types are divided depending on whether the line starts from the epicanthal fold. In the case of inline and in-out lines, the line begins from the epicanthal fold, so they are broadly categorized as an 'infold' type.

In the case of an inline, the inner corner line begins from the epicanthal fold, but because the line at the inner corner is covered by the epicanthal fold and is not clearly visible, it is commonly called an inner double eyelid. In contrast, an in-out line differs in that the line is consistently maintained from the epicanthal fold to the outer side and is clearly exposed. This infold type of double eyelid suits Asian eye shapes well, and the surgical case shown above is an example of an in-out line, which may make it easier to understand.

Among the types of double-eyelid lines, the semi-out line and outline, which are classified as outfold types, begin a few millimeters away from the epicanthal fold. This form is known as a common type of double-eyelid line among Westerners. Semi-out and outline lines are not covered by the epicanthal fold at the inner corner and are fully exposed, giving a cool, open, and glamorous impression. Many people feel that on Asian eyes, this can look somewhat exotic or less naturally blended. Therefore, when a patient prefers an outfold but still wants a natural-looking eye shape, I tend to recommend a semi-out line, where the gap between the inner corner line and the epicanthal fold is relatively narrow.

Based on the surgeries I have personally performed and my clinical experience, outline and semi-out line double eyelids were the most preferred among patients. I believe this is because they fit the needs of many Korean patients who want a look that is neither too natural nor too glamorous, and they are also the double-eyelid lines that best match current trends. However, the suitable line differs depending on each person's eye structure, so to identify the line that suits you best, I recommend receiving diagnoses at several clinics and then carefully deciding on the surgical method as well. Thank you.
